A large part of current AI stock pricing assumes major future productivity improvement — what happens if it doesn't materialize at the pace the market expects.
Much of the justification for high multiples on AI companies relies on the expectation that the technology will meaningfully improve productivity and profitability economy-wide — not just sell more software. If the actual improvement turns out slower or more limited than expected, the assumptions behind that pricing need to change.
Companies whose earnings multiple already prices in very high growth expectations (see How to Tell If a Stock Is Overvalued — A Practical Framework) are the most exposed — the gap between expectation and reality is exactly the mechanism that causes a multiple to compress sharply.
